The DS3800NFIB is a Fan/Exhaust Control board from General Electric’s Mark V Speedtronic™ series, designed for gas and steam turbine control systems. This board features 8 solid-state DC outputs (2A) , 8 thermocouple input channels, and no tachometer feedback capability—distinguishing it from the “NFIA” series which includes tachometer inputs. The DS3800NFIB is essentially a solid-state counterpart to the relay-based DS3800NFEE, offering silent, wear-free switching for DC fan applications where speed monitoring is not required.

The DS3800NFIB relies entirely on the Mark V CPU for temperature setpoints and fan commands, with no onboard control logic. It functions as a simple I/O interface: reading temperatures, sending data to the CPU, and receiving output commands to drive fans. This simplicity makes the DS3800NFIB highly reliable and cost-effective for basic DC fan control applications.

Advantages and Distinctive Features

  • Simple Solid-State Design: The DS3800NFIB provides silent, maintenance-free fan control with unlimited switching cycles—no relay contacts to wear out or replace.

  • Cost-Effective: Without tachometer or onboard logic circuitry, the DS3800NFIB is more affordable than the “NFIA” or “NFEC” series boards.

  • Low EMI Emissions: Solid-state switching generates minimal electromagnetic interference, making the DS3800NFIB suitable for cabinets with sensitive analog or communication cards.

  • Direct Thermocouple Interface: Onboard 12-bit ADCs read temperature directly, providing the CPU with real-time thermal data for decision-making.

  • Predictably Simple: No firmware revisions or complex configurations—the DS3800NFIB is a straightforward I/O board that’s easy to troubleshoot and replace.

Typical Application Fields

  • DC Fan-Only Cabinets: Where speed monitoring is not required and simple ON/OFF control suffices.

  • Climate-Controlled Indoor Installations: The 0°C to +60°C range supports standard power plant environments.

  • Silent Operation Priority: Facilities where mechanical relay clicking noise is undesirable.

  • Retrofit from Relay Boards: Replacing mechanical relay boards with the DS3800NFIB for maintenance-free operation.

  • Budget-Conscious Upgrades: Where the advanced features of “NFIA” or “NFEC” boards are not justified.

Selection Recommendations

  • Choose the DS3800NFIB if:

    • Your fans are DC-powered (24V or 48V) with current draw ≤2A.

    • You do not require tachometer speed feedback.

    • You want a simple, cost-effective solid-state solution.

    • Your cabinet is in a climate-controlled environment (0°C to +60°C).

    • The Mark V CPU handles all temperature control logic.

  • Choose the DS3800NFIA if: You need tachometer feedback but no onboard logic, and can accept 2A output.

  • Choose the DS3800NFIA1B1B if: You need tachometer feedback, 3A output, and autonomous fallback logic.

  • Choose the DS3800NFEE1C1B if: You need AC fan capability or mechanical relay isolation.

Critical Precautions

  • ESD Protection: The DS3800NFIB contains sensitive MOSFET and ADC components. Always wear a grounded ESD wrist strap.

  • DC Polarity and Voltage: Solid-state outputs are DC-only and polarity-sensitive. Connect positive to “+” and negative to “-“. Reverse polarity will destroy the output MOSFET. Do not exceed 48VDC—AC voltages will cause immediate catastrophic failure.

  • Current Limiting: Each output is rated at 2A continuous. For fan inrush currents exceeding 4A, install an external current-limiting device. The DS3800NFIB has no built-in overcurrent protection.

  • No Tachometer Inputs: The DS3800NFIB has no tachometer capability. Do not connect speed sensors—they will not function and may damage the board if incorrectly wired.

  • No Hot-Swap: Always depower the Mark V rack before inserting or removing the DS3800NFIB.

  • Slot Assignment: Install in auxiliary I/O slots (typically slots 8–10). Do not install in CPU or analog input slots.

  • CPU Dependency: Since the DS3800NFIB has no onboard logic, the Mark V CPU must send fan ON/OFF commands. If backplane communication is lost, the DS3800NFIB defaults to 100% fan speed (fallback mode) and illuminates the yellow “Backplane Active” LED off. Continuous fallback operation may over-cool the cabinet—address communication issues promptly.

  • Firmware Compatibility: The DS3800NFIB has minimal firmware requirements and is compatible with all Mark V CPU firmware versions (v3.x and above). No specific CPU upgrade is needed.
