GE DS3800NPSP

¥999.00

The DS3800NPSP is a power supply/converter board from GE’s Speedtronic Mark IV/V turbine control series. This model represents a specialized power distribution board within the DS3800 family, identified by the “NPSP” suffix which indicates a pulse-width modulated (PWM) power supply designed for high-efficiency DC-DC conversion in auxiliary and field power applications. Unlike the NPSE (logic power), NPSL (high-voltage field power), or NPSM (multi-output auxiliary) series, the DS3800NPSP is designed to provide regulated, high-efficiency DC power with low ripple and fast transient response, making it ideal for powering sensitive analog circuits, communication modules, and precision field instrumentation. The DS3800NPSP is typically installed in instrumentation cabinetscommunication panels, or analog signal conditioning racks where power quality is critical. This board is a high-performance power solution within the Mark IV/V ecosystem.

Critical note: The DS3800NPSP is a high-efficiency, low-ripple power board designed for sensitive analog and communication applications. It is not a high-current main rack supply (use NPSJ) nor a multi-output field supply (use NPSM). Hot-swapping is not supported.

Key Features & Advantages

  • High Efficiency (87%) – The PWM design of the DS3800NPSP minimizes heat dissipation, making it suitable for densely packed cabinets with limited cooling.

  • Ultra-Low Output Ripple – With < 15mVpp on the +5V rail and < 10mVpp on ±15V rails, the DS3800NPSP delivers exceptional power quality, ideal for sensitive analog measurement circuits and high-speed communication modules.

  • Excellent Regulation – Load regulation of ±0.2% and line regulation of ±0.1% ensure stable output voltages even with varying input conditions or load changes.

  • Full Isolation – 1.5kV isolation protects sensitive circuits from ground loops and transients, while the 2.0kV output-to-ground rating ensures safety and reliability.

  • Fast Transient Response – Recovery time from 50% load step is under 30μs, making the DS3800NPSP suitable for loads with rapid current fluctuations (e.g., communication transceivers).

  • Compact Single-Slot Design – Occupies only 4HP, ideal for space-constrained cabinets.

  • Direct Drop-In for Instrumentation Racks – Compatible with standard Mark IV/V backplanes in 4HP slots.

Typical Application Cases

  • Analog Signal Conditioning Racks – Provides clean, regulated power to analog isolators, transducers, and signal converters in turbine control systems.

  • Communication Interface Panels – Powers serial communication modules, fiber optic transceivers, and protocol gateways requiring low-ripple, stable power.

  • Instrumentation Cabinets – Supplies power to precision field instruments (pressure transmitters, temperature sensors) where power quality directly affects measurement accuracy.

  • Test and Calibration Equipment – Used in laboratory environments for control algorithm validation where high-quality power is essential for accurate measurements.

  • Retrofit Power Upgrades – Replaces aging power supplies in legacy cabinets with a high-efficiency, low-ripple solution.

Selection Guidelines & Precautions

  1. Application Verification – The DS3800NPSP is designed for sensitive analog and communication applications where power quality is critical. If your application is standard I/O logic with less stringent requirements, NPSE or NPSK boards may be more cost-effective.

  2. Power Budget – Calculate total current draw:

    • +5V: max 8A

    • ±15V: max 1.5A each

    • +24V: max 1A
Exceeding any output will trigger overcurrent protection and latch that output off.

  3. Grounding for Full Isolation – To maintain isolation, use separate returns:

    • OUT_GND (+5V and ±15V return) → Rack logic ground

    • 24V_ISO_GND (+24V return) → Field device common
Using a common ground defeats the isolation barrier.

  4. Input Power Sizing – At full load, input current at 100VDC is approximately 2.5A. Use a 6A slow-blow circuit breaker and cable gauge ≥ 2.5mm².

  5. Thermal Derating – Full output available up to 55°C:

    • 55°C–60°C: derate all outputs to 90% of rated current

    • 60°C–65°C: derate all outputs to 80% of rated current

    • Above 65°C: do not operate

  6. Compatibility – The DS3800NPSP is pin-compatible with all Mark IV backplanes in 4HP slots. No backplane modifications are required.

  7. Spare Sourcing – Production ended in 2015. When purchasing refurbished units, request a load test report verifying output ripple < 15mVpp (+5V) at full load and < 10mVpp (±15V). Visually inspect for capacitor bulging, discoloration, or burned traces. The DS3800NPSP is ideal for instrumentation and communication applications—do not use it as a main rack power supply (use NPSJ) or high-current field supply (use NPSL).
