The DS3800NPSM is a power supply/converter board from GE’s Speedtronic Mark IV/V turbine control series. This model represents a specialized power distribution board within the DS3800 family, identified by the “NPSM” suffix which indicates a multi-output auxiliary power supply designed for field device power and control logic in auxiliary cabinets. Unlike the NPSE (logic power for I/O racks) or NPSL (high-voltage field power) series, the DS3800NPSM is designed to provide multiple low-voltage DC outputs for powering field-mounted sensors, transmitters, and control relays, as well as providing isolated power for communication interfaces. It is typically installed in auxiliary control panelsremote I/O stations, or instrumentation cabinets where a variety of voltage rails are required for field devices. The DS3800NPSM is a versatile board that combines multiple power functions into a single 4HP slot.

Critical note: The DS3800NPSM is a multi-output auxiliary power board designed for field device power and signal conditioning in auxiliary cabinets. It is not suitable as a main rack logic power supply (use NPSJ or NPSE). Hot-swapping is not supported.

Key Features & Advantages

  • Versatile Multi-Output Design – The DS3800NPSM provides four different voltage rails (+5V, +24V, -24V, ±15V) in a single 4HP slot, reducing the need for multiple dedicated power supplies in auxiliary cabinets.

  • Isolated Field Power – The +24V and -24V outputs are isolated (1.0kV), providing protection for field devices against ground loops and transients.

  • Independent Overcurrent Protection – Each output has individual overcurrent protection, preventing a fault on one rail from affecting other outputs.

  • Compact Single-Slot Design – Occupies only 4HP, making it ideal for auxiliary cabinets with limited space.

  • Comprehensive LED Status – Individual LEDs for each output rail provide rapid visual fault diagnosis.

  • Direct Drop-In for Auxiliary Racks – Compatible with standard Mark IV/V backplanes in 4HP slots.

Typical Application Cases

  • Instrumentation Cabinets – Provides multiple voltage rails for field transmitters, pressure sensors, and temperature transducers in auxiliary panels.

  • Remote I/O Stations – Supplies +5V for communication modules, +24V for field relays, and ±15V for analog signal conditioning in remote I/O racks.

  • Communication Interface Panels – Powers serial communication converters, fiber optic transceivers, and protocol gateways requiring multiple voltage rails.

  • Signal Conditioning Cabinets – Supplies bias voltages for analog signal isolators, converters, and amplifiers in turbine auxiliary systems.

  • Legacy Auxiliary Spares – Many plants stock the DS3800NPSM as a versatile spare for auxiliary cabinets requiring multiple low-voltage outputs.

The DS3800NPSM is the most versatile auxiliary power board in the DS3800 family, offering multiple voltage rails in a compact 4HP slot, but with lower efficiency and capacity than dedicated single-output boards.

Selection Guidelines & Precautions

  1. Application Verification – The DS3800NPSM is designed for auxiliary power distribution with multiple low-voltage outputs. Verify that your application requires the specific combination of +5V, +24V, -24V, and ±15V rails before selecting this board.

  2. Power Budget – Calculate the total current draw for each output rail and ensure it does not exceed the rated values:

    • +5V: max 3A

    • +24V: max 2A

    • -24V: max 0.5A

    • ±15V: max 0.5A each
Exceeding any single output will trigger its individual overcurrent protection and latch that output off.

  3. Isolation Considerations – Only the +24V and -24V outputs are isolated (1.0kV). The +5V and ±15V outputs share the input return (non-isolated). If you require fully isolated logic power, use NPSE or NPSJ series boards instead.

  4. Grounding – For the isolated 24V outputs, connect the isolated returns (ISO_GND) to the field device common, separate from the logic ground (OUT_GND). The non-isolated +5V and ±15V outputs share OUT_GND with the input return—maintain a single-point ground for the logic section.

  5. Thermal Derating – Full output available up to 50°C:

    • 50°C–55°C: derate all outputs to 90% of rated current

    • 55°C–60°C: derate all outputs to 80% of rated current

    • Above 60°C: do not operate

  6. Compatibility – The DS3800NPSM is pin-compatible with all Mark IV backplanes in 4HP slots. No backplane modifications are required.

  7. Spare Sourcing – Production ended in 2010. When purchasing refurbished units, request a load test report verifying all four output rails at rated current. The DS3800NPSM is a versatile but aging design—consider modern alternatives if multiple dedicated power supplies are feasible. Visually inspect for capacitor bulging, discoloration, or burned traces.
