The DS3800NGPA is a Fan/Exhaust Control board from General Electric’s Mark V Speedtronic™ series, designed for gas and steam turbine control systems. This board features solid-state DC outputs with no tachometer feedback capability—placing it in the same category as the “NFIB” and “NFMC” series. The DS3800NGPA provides 8 solid-state DC outputs (2A) and 8 thermocouple input channels.

The “NGPA” designation indicates a board optimized for basic solid-state DC fan control with full temperature monitoring, but without speed feedback or advanced firmware features. It relies entirely on the Mark V CPU for control logic, functioning as a simple I/O interface. The DS3800NGPA is a cost-effective, maintenance-free solution for DC fan control in climate-controlled environments where tachometer feedback is not required.

Advantages and Distinctive Features

  • Simple Solid-State Design: The DS3800NGPA provides silent, maintenance-free fan control with unlimited switching cycles—no relay contacts to wear out or replace.

  • Full 8 Thermocouple Inputs: Comprehensive zone-by-zone temperature monitoring for large cabinets.

  • Low EMI Emissions: Solid-state switching generates minimal electromagnetic interference, making the DS3800NGPA suitable for cabinets with sensitive analog or communication cards.

  • Cost-Effective: One of the most affordable solid-state fan control boards in the Mark V lineup.

  • CPU-Dependent Operation: No onboard setpoint storage—relies entirely on the Mark V CPU, keeping the board simple and easy to troubleshoot.

Typical Application Fields

  • Climate-Controlled Indoor Installations: 0°C to +60°C range supports standard power plant environments.

  • DC Fan-Only Cabinets: Where tachometer feedback is not required.

  • Silent Operation Priority: Facilities where mechanical relay clicking noise is undesirable.

  • Budget-Conscious Solid-State Applications: Cost-effective solution for basic DC fan control.

  • High-Cycle Applications: Unlimited solid-state switching life for frequent fan cycling.

Selection Recommendations

  • Choose the DS3800NGPA if:

    • Your fans are DC-powered (24V or 48V) with current draw ≤2A.

    • You do not require tachometer speed feedback.

    • Your cabinet requires 8 temperature sensors for comprehensive monitoring.

    • You want a simple, cost-effective solid-state solution.

    • You have a climate-controlled environment (0°C to +60°C).

    • The Mark V CPU handles all control logic.

  • Choose the DS3800NFIB if: You need the same basic functionality but prefer the “NFIB” component revision (verify compatibility).

  • Choose the DS3800NFMC if: You need 4 thermocouple inputs with 8 outputs (fan-dense configuration) at a lower cost.

  • Choose the DS3800NFIA if: You need tachometer feedback with solid-state DC outputs.

Critical Precautions

  • ESD Protection: The DS3800NGPA contains sensitive MOSFET and ADC components. Always wear a grounded ESD wrist strap.

  • DC Polarity and Voltage: Solid-state outputs are DC-only and polarity-sensitive. Connect positive to “+” and negative to “-“. Reverse polarity will destroy the output MOSFET. Do not exceed 48VDC—AC voltages will cause immediate catastrophic failure.

  • Current Limiting: Each output is rated at 2A continuous. For fan inrush currents exceeding 4A, install an external current-limiting device. The DS3800NGPA has no built-in overcurrent protection.

  • No Tachometer Inputs: The DS3800NGPA has no tachometer capability. Do not connect speed sensors.

  • No Hot-Swap: Always depower the Mark V rack before inserting or removing the DS3800NGPA.

  • Slot Assignment: Install in auxiliary I/O slots (typically slots 8–10). Do not install in CPU or analog input slots.

  • CPU Dependency: Since the DS3800NGPA has no onboard logic, the Mark V CPU must send fan ON/OFF commands. If backplane communication is lost, the board defaults to 100% fan speed (fallback mode). Address communication issues promptly.

  • Firmware Compatibility: The DS3800NGPA is compatible with all Mark V CPU firmware versions (v3.x and above). No specific CPU upgrade is needed.
